Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original, a Sunday comic, Jon loses his dinner to Garfield and Odie eating it. Here, the strip has been edited to make a reference to The Dark Knight.

The Dark Knight is the second film in The Dark Knight Trilogy, directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale as Batman. This particular film follows up from the last one, Batman Begins, which teased the arrival of The Joker, played by the late Heath Ledger.

The strip's title comes from this character. At certain points in the movie, The Joker asks someone if he/she'd like to know how he got the scars on his mouth. In one such story (of which there are almost as many as times he asks), he claims his father killed his mother and laughed about it, then turned to him and said, "Why so serious?"

The strip proper gives Odie, who is made up as the character, dialogue that is a paraphrase of dialogue from another scene in the movie.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Yep, a year out and I've managed to pull out a Dark Knight joke. But I bet you didn't see this twist coming, didja?

Did you?
