To emphasize the snail's slow speed, the strip is extended to lengthen the time it takes for the snail to respond, complete with Garfield's eyelids steadily drooping.

Immediately upon seeing this strip, I thought that elongating it would make it more effective. Initially, it was just nine panels, then I figured that it just. Wasn't. Long. Enough.

It may be true that brevity is the soul of wit, but sometimes, you need to trade in the soul for the effect.
