Explanation[edit | edit source]

Titanic is a 1997 film (assuming Negative N didn't mean the 1915 silent Italian film, the 1943 German film, or the 1953 film) whose climax is the wrecking and subsequent sinking of the RMS Titanic, an event that took the lives of more than 1,500 people. In the film, this includes Jack, who died so that Rose would live. To say that Titanic has an unmitigatedly "happy" ending would definitely mark one as misanthropic.

By contrast, the original strip's joke was about Old Yeller, which ends with the death of one dog, demonstrating his general dislike of dogs.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

In retrospect, it is a bit of an Outside Joke.

Original strip: 1983-04-25.
