Explanation[edit | edit source]

The strip is a reference to the Pokémon series. Some Pokémon games' titles take the form Pokémon (color), so the title of the comic makes reference to this using Garfield's dominant color.

Smog is a Poison-type move. However, Poison-type moves are never super effective against Normal-type Pokémon.

Snorlax is one of the original 151 Pokémon; as mentioned in the description, Snorlax is extremely lazy and gluttonous and is among the heaviest Pokémon (the heaviest in its debut), so the comparison to Garfield is quite apt.

The labelling of Jon as a Psychic-type is presumably a reference to him occasionally being able to read Garfield's thoughts, while the line about responding to individuals that are not there is a Garfield Minus Garfield reference.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Jon
Normal/Psychic
Type: Human Joke Pokemon
Height: ?'??"
Weight: ??? Lbs.
This POKEMON is well known for its ability to make a fool of itself. Sometimes known to respond to other individuals that are not actually there.

Garfield
Normal
Type: Fat Cat Pokemon
Height: ?'??"
Weight: ??? Lbs.
Its ability to sleep and eat rivals that of SNORLAX. When active, its ill temperament makes it a danger to both friend and foe alike.

Original strip from 2009-07-02.
