Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip refers to the Metal Gear video game franchise (the title specifically referencing the Metal Gear Solid sub-series, likely the one that made it famous). The series was one of the first stealth games to be made, pioneering the idea of sneaking around and discreetly disposing of enemies instead of brazenly attacking them. One of the most famous parts of the series is "Alert Mode" - if an enemy spots the player character, a red exclamation point appears over their head (alongside an iconic sound effect), which is recreated here. In most of the games in the series, said player character is Solid Snake, the man in the last panel here.

Of course, the entire joke is that the original strip was entirely about a surprise party.
