Explanation[edit | edit source]

Normally, characters behave as if they're more or less real. Despite the cartoon physics in play, they fear death and injury, seek out sustenance and affection, and have only the usual problems with pencils.

Here, Garfield has managed to use a pencil to erase the hairy part of Jon's head. At worst, he's still merely annoyed with the outcome.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

This is the first of two strips based on the same strip (2005-05-17). This was the second of the two variations made. I liked the more "fourth-wall" idea, but wasn't entirely sure it worked until I added the pencil into panel #3. That particular detail comes from the 1988-09-05 strip.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Jon looks at himself in a mirror. The top of his head is entirely gone.}
{beat}
Jon: So much for home barbering.
Garfield: {holding up a pencil} I thought I did a pretty good job.
