Explanation[edit | edit source]

The iconic scene from film history is one of the final scenes in the 1958 film The Fly, based on the short story of the same name. In the story, an eccentric scientist is working on a matter transporter, but when he tries it on himself, he finds that a fly has gotten in there with him, and their atoms are mixed together. This causes them each to start gaining the features of the other. In the film, after the man-sized scientist is killed, the fly with the scientist's head and arm is found in a web, being advanced upon by a spider and screaming "Help me! Help me!". Thus, in this strip, a Garfield-headed Jon is found in a spider's web. The spider is still in the center, not even facing its odd catch, but it's only a matter of time.

Metri causa means "for the sake of the meter"; it refers to tricks employed to keep to the meter of a poem. The author of this strip contends -- probably correctly -- that this error in classification was not due to such a reason.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

I realised it's been a while since I heard anything about Garfield's hatred of spiders, so I decided to do something inspired by one of the iconic scenes in film history. A quick text search revealed that the first spider-themed strip was actually in praise of the critters, albeit one that calls them "insects" without even metri causa to hide behind. That became my base. Pretty much everything else I then stole from various other spider-related strips. (And yes, I know neither Garfield nor Jon are insect-sized. That's what I get for doing these things based off ideas I get at 4 AM.)

Strip based upon: 1979-12-28 with various body parts and word balloons from 1986-01-15 1982-12-31 and 1984-07-17.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Garfield with Jon's head sits leaning on a windowsill, looking outside. A spider's web is in the corner of the window. It looks like an insect is trapped in it.}
{Close up of the web, showing the "insect" is a tiny Jon with the head of Garfield, screaming...}
Jon: Help me!
{Zoom out to show Garfield with Jon's head, smiling.}

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • While the URL for the text search has been preserved, it only returns a 410: Gone error.
