Explanation[edit | edit source]

In a take on the Garfield Minus Garfield approach, the scale initially acts as though Garfield is standing on it. When it realizes no one is on it, it defaults to what it says before being stepped on in the original strip.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

The original strip is from 1985-11-18.

One would think, in a world without Garfield, that various beings would adjust their behaviour accordingly. And then, there is the talking scale.

Is it malfunctioning? Is it pining for days of obese cats that are perhaps long past, or even non-existent? Does it know something we don't? Or is it possessed?
