Explanation[edit | edit source]

This is a meta-joke about the strip buffer; usually, most strips are submitted several months before actually appearing on the site. (For example, #1857 was submitted in early March of 2014 and got published on June 19th. Note, however, that the exact time varies depending on the preexisting load, type of strip, etc.) "The Slow Path" is a reference to a method of time-traveling to the future: simply waiting to get there, as Garfield is doing here.

As for the description, the Celebrity Deathmatch episode in question ends with a fight between the Three Stooges and the Three Tenors (who were still in the limelight in 1999). The former trio are brought to the present with a time machine operated by resident scientist "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, which remains in the ring as the fight begins. The quote comes from Moe, shortly after luring Plácido Domingo into the time machine and shortly before aging him into the next century - leaving just a skeleton which quickly falls apart.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

To quote an episode of Celebrity Deathmatch ("Censoring Problems"): Give my regards to the future!

(Bonus points if you can guess the context!)

Original strip: 2014-06-19.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Garfield looks at a calender, displaying the month of December}
Garfield: Let's do an experiment... Now, if the current date is December 5th, 2014...
{Garfield takes down the calender and writes on it, smiling}
Garfield: Then let's wait and see how long it takes for this to exit the buffer...
