Explanation[edit | edit source]

This comic is an obvious jab at Foodfight!, an animated movie that can best be described as "Toy Story with food mascots". The film centers on one such mascot, Dex Dogtective, who teams up with a few residents of their supermarket city to prevent an antagonistic mascot from taking over their home. The film became notorious for its development history; originally slated for a 2003 release, it instead languished in development hell for a period of nine years before being released in 2012, during which time several licenses lapsed and technology became increasingly advanced -- by the time of its release, the film's visuals became notably dated, as seen here. In addition, the film was criticized for its obvious product placement, as well as its story, which allegedly includes double entendres and Nazi overtones. Oh, and the movie itself is supposedly a reference to Casablanca.
