Explanation[edit | edit source]

The easy part of this edit was to swap the positions of "dinner" and "Liz" in the sentence. The less easy part -- probably -- was replacing Liz with the background, removing her from the strip... at least as we know her. The intent is to make it seem as though Jon is cooking Liz rather than for Liz... and having just as much trouble as with a normal meal. Given this, Jon would definitely be breaking up with her, as opposed to merely trying to make a nice meal with Garfield implying that she won't want to stay his girlfriend after experiencing his cooking.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Given how easy this is and how long ago by submission time, I'm shocked I haven't already seen it up on the website by now.

And I think the answer to Garfield's first question in this version is an obvious 'yes', to say nothing of the fact that he doesn't seem to care.

Original strip: 2015-03-15.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Jon: I'm gonna cook Liz for dinner tonight!
Garfield: Is this your way of breaking up with her?
Jon (offscreen): Baking powder...that's basically baking soda, right?
Garfield: Go for it.
Jon (offscreen): Huh...the butter is crispy. Is that normal?
Garfield: In a comic strip, yes.
Jon (offscreen): I wonder if I should've added the eggs in before I put it in the oven.
Garfield: Does the oven have an "undo" button?
Jon (offscreen): Okay, where's the fire extinguisher?
Garfield: Right where you left it the last time you cooked.
(There is a horrifying mess in the cooking tray)
Jon: I am so, so sorry.
Garfield: Jon's smart enough to feel disappointed in himself, but too dense to do anything right.
