Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original, Garfield was sobbing over the locked-up refrigerator (he was on a diet). Here, however, Garfield clearly represents the author, emotionally devastated by the demise of old technology (here represented by VHS tapes, 8-tracks, a record player, a cathode ray television, a rotary phone, and a typewriter) in favor of modern devices (smartphones, MP3s, DVDs/Blu Ray, computers, high definition televisions, and so on), all accompanied by the Beach Boys song "Caroline, No" (which is about loss, fitting the theme).

The author's notes continue the screed against modern technology, noting the nostalgia-fueled resurgence of records (which, in his eyes, only further damages the CD market). (His arguments, most noticeably the mention of the "good old days", fall straight into the "nostalgia filter" fallacy.) He also reveals his... preoccupation with the sight of Garfield crying (providing a still from a Garfield and Friends episode for further context).

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

This SRoMG is more serious than others. I felt a little bit making this. I have this thing about old technology, and I believe that this world has become too technological. Whatever happened to the good old days with no DVDs, vinyl and cassette, and quality programming? When CD is on the brink of death because of MP3 but somehow staying alive along with records, you know something's gone terribly wrong.

I chose the song "Caroline, No" because it's about nostalgia, and it went well here. One line of the song talks about bringing things back once they're gone, which is what nostalgia is all about.

On a side note, I also have this strange thing with Garfield crying. It's not a fetish or anything, but just look at Garfield's reaction to his dream bed. Isn't it adorable?
