Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original comic, Garfield responded to Jon by boasting of his own ability to shed (presumably thinking Jon was impersonating him).

Here, he instead makes a non-sequitur reference to the massively popular indie RPG Undertale. The game revolves around the dichotomy between humans and monsters (that is, non-humans of various types - skeletons, robots, ghosts, etc.) - before the events of the game proper, a war between the two races ended with the monsters sealed underground. As the game nears its end, it's revealed that the power of seven human souls (represented as single-colored hearts, as seen here) can permanently break the barrier between the underground and the surface - and the king of the monsters already has six, with the (human) player character serving as the last one he needs. (Incidentally, said character's soul is the traditionally-colored red heart).

However, it could also be referencing another part of the game. (Because of the spoilers, the explanation will be written in white, immediately after this sentence.) After defeating what appears to be the final boss (the aforementioned king, Asgore), another character (an evil flower named Flowey) abruptly kills him and steals the souls for himself. Given that both he and Garfield are malevolent entities, it's entirely possible that this was the intended reference all along.

Of course, the author's inspiration for this edit was this Tumblr post by "aquacycle" (who has since changed URLs to "scuttlebugjamboree") - a poorly-drawn picture of Garfield (in black and white, the same style Undertale uses for battles) proclaiming the exact same thing as he does in the final panel here. (It's all just a non-sequitur, of course, as is Tumblr's typical brand of humor.)

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Based on a similar post on Tumblr from aquacycle. Also because Undertale and Garfield make little sense when mashed together.
