Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original, Jon was asking Garfield about a "jelly filled (sic) doughnut". Here, he's asking Godzilla about a jelly-filled Tokyo.

Godzilla (or Gojira) has been one of the most famous, if not the most famous, examples of kaiju in the movies. The stereotypical Godzilla movie would have him stomping around Tokyo, destroying things as plastic toy tanks attack him.

The author's notes focus entirely on the missed hyphenation in the original, as compared to the author's edit. Instead of giving us the real rules of hyphenation, he lists "exceptions" that really don't apply:

  1. I comes before E after C. This is a rule of spelling, not punctuation, and really has too many exceptions to cover properly without causing other misspellings, though some have tried.
  2. b² - 4ac < 0. This pertains to the quadratic formula. If the discriminant -- the part under the radical in the full formula -- works out to be negative, then the formula is forced to take the square root of a negative number, and thus the answers will be complex.
  3. it's your turn, your opponent has at least one man on the bar, and the stakes have been doubled exactly once during the match. This appears to be a rule of backgammon.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

When a compound adjective consisting of a noun before an adjective occurs directly before the noun it modifies, a hyphen is required, unless

1. I comes before E after C, 2. b² - 4ac < 0, or 3. it's your turn, your opponent has at least one man on the bar, and the stakes have been doubled exactly once during the match.

Honestly, Jon, this is elementary stuff.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Jon: Godzilla, did you eat my jelly-filled Tokyo?
Godzilla: It was like this, Jon. It happened to be a rogue city wounded in a jungle bakery
Godzilla: Crazed with fear and pain, it charged my mouth and I was forced to eat it in self-defense
Jon: It's times like this I wish I understood him
