Explanation[edit | edit source]

Both the Invisible Wall and the Insurmountable Waist-High Fence are common ways to force the player of a video game to stay out of certain areas, or at least to approach them the way it wants the player to. (An example of the latter use is in Paper Mario, where you can see a Star Piece in the first section of Toad Town, but you can't get it until you return from Lavalava Island with Sushie.) Where Invisible Walls block you, often without in-game explanation, Insurmountable Waist-High Fences are often a meager explanation for why you can't go that way, even if the character could jump high enough to clear it. It's basically an Invisible Wall on top of a too-short obstacle.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Hey, Garfield, meet the Invisible Wall's visible cousin, the Insurmountable Waist-High Fence!

This is one of a few strips I chose based on the repeating numbers in the date.

Original strip: 2003-03-03.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Garfield sees a sign.}
Sign: Insurmountable Waist-High Fence
{Garfield smirks at us as he passes the sign, even as he approaches the fence.}
{Garfield smacks his entire body into it and the space above it. Why didn't he try to jump? Perhaps it's a good thing he didn't.}
