Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original strip, Garfield still finds himself chilly, but feels an eerie sensation rather than blaming Jon messing with the thermostat. Strips following would follow Garfield as he finds the house long-abandoned, but for himself; in the end, he snaps out of his terrifying vision of being all alone -- monophobia being the fear of being alone -- to find that Jon is there, offering food.

In this edit, a previously-unknown volcano blows them all up before he can make any such discovery.

The closest known volcano to Muncie, Indiana is probably Hicks Dome, in Illinois, which is thought to have last erupted 400-345 million years ago. It's fairly close to Indiana, so an eruption could certainly have an effect on a home in Muncie, but it's unlikely to really blow them up. Besides, the author's note seems to indicate that the volcano sprung up in Muncie.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

There is still no explanation as to why the house is so dark. Probably because Garfield woke up before Jon.

There is also no explanation for the volcano that suddenly sprung up in Muncie.

Original strip: 1989-10-23.
