Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original, the food was made of "gunk", and Garfield's reaction was not wide-eyed, as he expected as much. Here, the food is made of gong, or human waste, so Garfield's wide-eyed reaction and "EW." are entirely justified. His speculated use of bleach as an oral cleansing agent, however, is ill-advised and potentially fatal.

The reference in the author's note is to a sketch from a Horrible Histories TV show about gong farming.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

"Look, "gong" means poo, and your family has been shovelling it up for generations!"

Original strip: 1979-10-24.
