Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the first original Garfield strip, Jon introduces himself and calls himself a cartoonist. He's called a cartoonist because he draws cartoons. Jon points to his orange cat named Garfield. Garfield introduces himself and calls himself a cat, and introduces Jon. Jon says their only thought is to entertain the readers, but Garfield clearly has being fed on the brain.

Here, the author has replaced Garfield with Kirk's first officer, Spock, and Jon Arbuckle has been replaced by James T. Kirk, both from Star Trek: The Original Series and its related films. Kirk introduces himself as your captain, and introduces his first officer, Spock. Spock introduces himself, calling himself a Vulcan, and introduces his captain, Jim Kirk. Their only thought is "to boldly go where no man has gone before," a reference to one of the points of the mission of the Enterprise's crew. Spock responds with "Fascinating," a sort of catchphrase of his.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

This is one of the first things I thought of doing when I saw SRoMG.

Original strips: 1978-06-19.
