Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original strip, Jon is obviously very depressed and tries to confide in Garfield. Jon thinks he'll go out and shoot himself, but Garfield retorts that he is just trying to cheer him up.

Here, in which Garfield is (almost predictably) removed from the strip, Jon is more depressed than ever. Without Garfield to "comfort" Jon, he apparently actually proceeds to shoot himself. The final panel conists of a newspaper headline notifying the reader of Jon's suicide.

The editor's note is most likely referring to the contentious 2016 presidential election in the United States; it's likely that this strip was submitted on or after November 8 of that year.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Looking back at several of the older Garfield strips, it was surprising to see how much dark stuff Jim included in his comic. With Garfield out of the picture, strips such as this one ended up having a much more grim undertone. So, I thought to myself, "How can I make a depressing strip like this one ever more depressing?" With one simple addition, this was my result.

Original strip: 1983-10-19.

[Ed: I knew I could find the perfect submission for election day if I tried.]
