Explanation[edit | edit source]

This comic is a page from an early issue of Marvel Comics' The Ren & Stimpy Show comic book, based on the 1990s Nickelodeon animated series of the same name. The show and the comic, as the title suggested, focused on the comedic adventures of an irate Chihuahua named Ren Hoek (not seen in this comic) and his dim-witted feline friend, Stimpson J. Cat.

In this particular comic page, Stimpy (as "Dr. Stupid") demonstrates how comics are made, by cutting out panels from existing panels and taping them together. In a bit of infinite recursion, the fifth panel reveals the process to have been performed on this page, and indeed, it does look to have been taped together.

The author takes this to explain Randomised Garfields, as they do roughly the same thing digitally. Here, the author has replaced the word "comic" with "Garfield" in the first panel and added mention of Garfield to the second panel.

According to the Ren & Stimpy Wiki, Stimpy is a Manx cat.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Here's a page from Marvel's Ren & Stimpy where Dr. Stupid answers the existence of Randomised Garfields, as evidenced from these two pages: [EDIT: (an old Garfield randomiser page, now offline)] http://malicelabs.com/garfield/

It seems somewhat appropriate that another cartoon cat explains the very nature of the Garfield beast. Seriously, what kind of cat is Stimpson J. Cat supposed to be?
