Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original, Garfield is fully there, so Jon's query is because a grin like that on Garfield can only mean trouble.

Here, we see nothing of him but his grin. This refers to the Cheshire Cat from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, who is famous for partial disappearance, often leaving nothing but a grin. Such a thing happening in reality would certainly warrant a reaction like Jon's.

The author offers up an alternative title that would leave nothing but the "G" (assuming the nonstandard notation of characters right next to each other being added together rather than multiplied; perhaps an alternative to the alternative would be "Garfield Divided By Arfield"), probably for "grin".

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Alternative title: "Garfield Minus Arfield."

Original strip: 1980-04-11.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Jon looks around and sees only a grin floating in mid-air}
Jon: Okay, Garfield. What've you done?
Jon: What've you done?! What've you done?!
Garfield: {floating grin} I love mental games.
