Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original Garfield strip, Odie appears, and Garfield looks at Odie bouncing around being just like a little happy dog does. Odie hits the brakes, just like a car does and falls off of the table with a crash. Garfield tells the reader that he just tampered with Odie's brakes.

In this Square Root of Minus Garfield strip, Garfield looks at Odie, bouncing around, about to slide on an oil slick, and fall off of the table with a crash. Garfield tells the reader that this prank was brought to you by Bally Midway, which is the maker of Spy Hunter, a late 80s driving video game in which, among other things, an oil slick weapon and a missile launcher are available from weapons vans; all weapons have special lights on the cabinet that light up when they are available, and the "Oil Slick" light is between the "Missiles" and "Weapons Van" Lights thus explaining the title of this strip.

The author's note shows a link to Henry Mancini's theme from Peter Gunn, but claim if they're a certain age, has just started playing chiptune in their head, and can't get it out.
