Explanation[edit | edit source]

The only significant difference between this strip and the original is that each panel is larger than the one before.

In #312, the author dealt with one ultimate fate of the universe; here, the author deals with another. Here, the universe will eventually tear itself apart in its expansion.

Interesting to note: In #312, Garfield uses the prevention of the heat death of the universe as a justification for sloth, while in this one, as in the original, Garfield takes the possibility that the universe is expanding as an excuse to indulge in gluttony.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Big Rip.

It seems Garfield forgot to take into account that donuts are expanding too. Or maybe he tries to forget that he is about to be ripped apart...

Original: 1999-09-27.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Jon: Some people think the universe is constantly expanding.
{second panel expands}
Garfield: All right!
{third panel expands more}
Garfield: Room for another donut!
