Explanation[edit | edit source]

The original strip involved a grossly overweight Garfield rocking to himself and humming, the punchline being that he did not have a chair to rock on. Here, Garfield sings a song from Sesame Street - particularly, one by Number Guy, the "banjo dude" the author is referring to - before berating himself for not only getting it stuck in his head, but singing something "so childish." The title is a Bible verse and describes "putting away childish things," fitting the theme; on the other hand, part of Sesame Street's enduring popularity is its appeal to both children and adults, so therefore some readers may not share the same views as this strip's author. Other tidbits of this strip are explained sufficiently enough, so this explanation will not cover those.

The author writes[edit | edit source]

...Don't you hate when songs you'd rather not have in your head get stuck in your head?

So when I saw the original strip, Garfield's "♪hummm♪" somehow reminded me of that banjo dude that used to be on Sesame Street all the time, many years ago. I thought I had forgotten about this guy, along with many other things from my childhood, but I guess not. It got to the point where I said, "All right, I have to make this". Instead of just using the Garfield font, however, I went for a more authentic look and painstakingly cut out letters and words from several different strips to make this. It took a couple days to do, but the result is worth it.

...please tell me I'm not the only one who remembers the banjo dude from Sesame Street.

Later references[edit | edit source]

This strip was later re-edited as #3479, and is in fact an example of the above mentioned instance of a reader not agreeing with the message of the strip, viewing it as an insult.
