Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original Garfield strip, Garfield watched "Whoopee Cushion Theater", where somebody sits on some whoopee cushions causing it to make some sounds. Garfield uses the remote to change the channel to something else.

Here, he is instead watching the Nickelodeon animated series Hey Arnold! One of the main characters is Helga Pataki, who acts like a bully towards the titular protagonist, Arnold Shortman, and often calls him "Football Head" due to the shape of his head, but secretly loves him and often soliloquizes about her love for him in the manner seen here. The heavy breathing in the sixth panel comes from Brainy, a kid who has a crush on Helga and often interrupts her pining for Arnold, which almost always results in her punching his face. Unlike the "Whoopee Cushion Theater" in the original strip, Garfield seems to be enjoying the show.

The author made this in honor of Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie, a made-for-TV finale movie spun off from the show that aired in November 2017. Ironically, the author admits they never really liked the show themselves.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

I made this in honor of the upcoming Hey Arnold! TV movie.

This will probably get me a lot of hate, but I never liked Hey Arnold!. I mean, I don't think it's bad or terrible, it just never did it for me. But I know that a lot adore this show, so I created this comic, pointing out how I remember the series, but trying to not step on anyone's toes.

Original strip: 2012-11-04.
