Explanation[edit | edit source]

This edit is based on #187, which was a reference to the Pokémon franchise. This remake of the original edit likewise plays on the trend of remakes that began with the 2004 games Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, which were based on Pokémon Red and Blue; as such, the strip's basic aspects are left intact, while also making corrections and alluding to mechanics that were introduced in games released since Red and Blue:

  • In the original, Jon's Smog dealt super effective damage to Garfield; however, a Normal-type Pokémon would not be weak to a Poison-type move such as Smog. Thus, "It's SUPER EFFECTIVE!" was changed to "A critcal hit!" (The message is displayed with yellow text from Generation VI onward.)
  • Abilities were introduced in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire; most Pokémon will have one of two possible Abilities. Beginning with Black and White, Hidden Abilities were introduced, which can only be obtained through special means; this explains Jon having "Wind Power" as his Ability, since the other two (as listed below) are Forewarn and Klutz. Additionally, when an Ability activates, a separate text box is displayed from those games onward.
  • From Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness onward, the message "Wild <Pokémon> appeared!" became "A wild <Pokémon> appeared!"
  • The basic information of the two Pokémon has been updated; it now mentions their Abilities, categories, Pokédex number, height, and weight alongside their types, as well as reworded Pokédex entries. (The original strip used "type" in place of "category.")
  • As referenced above, remakes of older titles will often have another word added to the original name (e.g., Pokémon FireRed for Pokémon Red and Pokémon Omega Ruby for Pokémon Ruby.
  • Jon's HP and Garfield's HP are shown in the last panel, replacing their respective lines of dialogue.
  • Finally, the author's notes make a reference to #2306, which also made heavy reference to Pokémon.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

#??? Jon
Category: Human Joke Pokémon
Type: Normal/Psychic
Abilities: Forewarn or Klutz
Height: ???m
Weight: ???kg
It is prone to making a fool of itself. It's so awkward and paranoid, it'll respond to something or someone which is not actually there.

#??? Garfield
Category: Fat Cat Pokémon
Type: Normal
Abilities: Truant or Gluttony
Height: ???m
Weight: ???kg
Its propensity for laziness rivals that of Snorlax. When Garfield is fed a certain type of food, its girth triples. For some reason, it loves to torment Jon.

Return to the Jonto region in Pokémon Striped Orange and Pokémon Ignoramus Yellow, coming to SRoMG whenever!

Original strip: 2009-07-02.

Original Square Root of Minus Garfield: 2009-10-27.
