Explanation[edit | edit source]

The Necronomicon was a non-existent book featured in the works of H.P. Lovecraft and his followers, starting with "The Hound". A number of publishers have since published many books called The Necronomicon after the fact.

A number of Lovecraft's works contain a Great Old One called Cthluhu, whose name is given to the mythos from which he comes. He is often depicted as having a head not too dissimilar from an octopus, with tentacles coming from around his mouth. Thus, an image of an octopus in a strip the author made while not using any outside sources is apt.

The original contexts:

  1. Jon proceeds to ask if Garfield knows how they killed their enemies; Garfield snarks that they gave them a ball of yarn to play with, as he himself is tangled in one.
  2. Garfield attempts to dissuade Jon from stomping a spider, because he wanted to do that.
  3. Revealed to be a dream precipitated by Odie's tongue resting on his head.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

This is the closest actual Lovecraftian interpretation I can get within the bounds of Garfield strips, using: 1994-08-03, 1994-04-19, 1980-06-26.
