Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip essentially transplants Garfield into the first edition of Schlock Mercenary, dropping Schlock in favor of Garfield and making use of three different poses from two original Garfield strips to have Garfield properly assume Schlock's role, Garfield using his own claw where Schlock had pulled out a weapon. The author's reasoning for making this strip is sufficiently explained in the author's notes; as the author's notes imply, this is indeed the author's first Square Root of Minus Garfield strip to run.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

This is the first webcomic I have ever made.

It struck me how similar Garfield and Schlock were; they're both sociopathic blobs who eat enormous amounts and use violence to achieve their goals.

Original Schlock Mercenary strip: 2000-06-12.

Original strips: 1980-12-10, 1981-03-04.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Garfield: Hi. I'm here to enlist.
Der Trihs: You can't. You aren't human.
Sign: Travel the galaxy!
{Garfield starts unsheathing a claw}
Der Trihs: You see, little fella, we don't do sociological stuff like "interspeciated workplaces." We're a crack company of space mercenaries. We do "hurting people" and "breaking things".
Sign: Meet fascinating life-forms...
{Garfield points his claw at Der Trihs}
Garfield: Sounds like my kind of fun.
Der Trihs: When can you start?
Sign: ...and kill them
