Explanation[edit | edit source]

In this strip, the author slightly reworded Garfield's dialogue in the second panel to change "tribulation" to "trials and tribulations", then replaces Jon and his dialogue in the third panel with Dahlia Hawthorne.

Dahlia Hawthorne is a character in the third game of the Ace Attorney series, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Trials and Tribulations; the game's subtitle is what the author reworded the second panel to invoke. Ms. Hawthorne is a key character to the Ace Attorney narrative, being part of three cases within Trials and Tribulations as the game's primary villain and being part of key events to the game's and the series's narrative.

The author's note makes reference to the Ace Attorney timeline, which was set in the near-future at the time of the games' original releases; the key event in defining the setting of the series, the DL-6 incident, occurred in the first game of the series and was stated as taking place on December 28, 2001, with the first game in the series taking place fifteen years later. The statement that Maya Fey and Franziska von Karma were roughly born around the timeframe of the original strip's publishing date is based on those characters' ages in relation to the stated date of the DL-6 incident.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

To be fair, if Dahlia Hawthorne was around I'd probably stay in bed that day too.

I looked up anything interesting that might have happened in the Ace Attorney-verse in 1999, but the only thing that came up was that Maya and Franziska were born around that year.

Original strip: 1999-03-22.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Garfield is in his bed, completely covered by his blanket}
Garfield: Inside here, it's warm and cozy
Garfield: Out there is Trials and Tribulations
{The view zooms out to show Dahlia Hawthorne standing behind Garfield. She is out of focus and definitely not just scaled improperly}
Garfield: I rest my case
