Explanation[edit | edit source]

The author's edits are as follows:

  • Remove the throwaway first row.
  • Remove the penultimate fifth panel, but save the thought balloon, and move the last panel to its place.
  • Put a picture of Jim Davis in the last panel's place, and put the thought balloon there, pointing the bubbles at him.

In the original strip, Garfield's thought about his gag was just about hitting the backrest so the footrest will kick Odie. But Jim Davis is the cartoonist here; is he not responsible for every thought, every action that the characters take? By having Garfield praise his own gag, Jim is really praising his own gag, including the part where Odie turns it around on him. This edit reflects that line of thought by putting Garfield's thought in Jim's head.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Garfield: Well, well, well. Odie's sitting in front of the recliner. Let's have some fun, shall we? Watch this!
{Garfield runs at the recliner, jumps over Odie's head and lands on the recliner's backrest. This causes the footrest at the front of the recliner to fold out, WHAPing Odie across the room. Odie marches back and smacks the footrest closed, causing the backrest to fly back into the upright position and Garfield to fly through the air.}
Jim Davis: {sitting at a drawing desk} I hate to brag, but it took a brilliant mind to figure that gag out.
