Explanation[edit | edit source]

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

1. "We all miss you, Garfield" is a lie. Jon once regarded his pets as he might regard children. Now that it's obvious that he's stuck in some ironic hell where he doesn't grow a single gray hair over 40 years, and coherent, continuous events occur less and less often, he's grown apathetic toward the other things that can't die. Garfield's death would most likely result in a sense that this prison cannot hold him forever.

2. This is how Garfield should canonically end. Another strip of Garfield lazing about declaring how he's larger than life, followed by the revelation that his brain functions have finally ceased. No funeral, no arc where Lyman takes back the dog, no exploration of the lives of Frank the man who was maimed by Garfield and was cruelly reincarnated as a cat just to be flirted with by his killer a month later (an introspection on how little it means to be human and how the notion of karma exists to perpetuate a can-do attitude), just the fall that Garfield's pride befits.

3. There are probably several dozen strips you can do this to. Requirements: Panel 1, Garfield says something while lying down lifelessly, Panel 2, beat. Panel 3 doesn't matter. Bonus points if Garfield says something arrogant in Panel 1, 3x point multiplier if it's this strip in particular, +10,000 points if you spell "GARFIELD" by hitting the letters in the middle of the playing field in that order, etc.

Original strip: 2022-06-20.
