Explanation[edit | edit source]

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

The Land is the primary location of the 10 books in the Thomas Covenant series, which is broken down into 2 trilogies and a final quadrilogy. The series itself is fantasy, and on a maturity scale with 1 being The Chronicles of Narnia, 5 being The Lord of the Rings, and 10 being A Song of Ice and Fire, it would be about a 7 or 8. The Thomas Covenant series seemed like a great source for weird mash-ups with Garfield, and so I figured I'd just transport Garfield to The Land.

Caer-Caveral is a secondary(-ish?) character, first appearing in the second book The Illearth War of the first trilogy The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, The Unbeliever as a stump with a single limb upraised, though with leaves at the end (this SRoMG scene takes place after the leaves have fallen). Caer-Caveral appears in the other sets of books in a few different forms, but the stump version is my favorite.

Original strip: 2013-11-20.
