Explanation[edit | edit source]

The author gained inspiration to create this strip while on a catch-up binge of reading Garfield and Pearls Before Swine roughly two months after his mother's death. Upon catching the Pearls Before Swine strip in question, the author saw the setup as an ideal counter to the Garfield in 2053 running gag (well, as ideal a counter that can be done with the author's usual lame premises); from there, the author sought a Garfield strip from roughly a similar timeframe to drop the premise and much of the key dialogue into, and whipped it up from there. Unlike the Pearls Before Swine strip, Jon, Garfield, and Jim Davis each have a line, unlike where Rat had two lines, Stephan Pastis had one line, and Goat was silent.

This strip serves as a counter to Garfield in 2053 by bringing up the possibility that the Garfield comic strip does not become a franchise zombie upon Jim Davis's death and indeed will end either before or as a result of Jim's death. Note that the assumption presented here of the Garfield cast going "poof" upon Jim's death is hypothetical, much in the same fashion that the premise of the Garfield in 2053 running gag is also a hypothetical; all potential counters to the Garfield in 2053 running gag made during Jim's lifetime would have to deal in hypotheticals, as they would deal in details that cannot become solidified as fact until Jim's death. Unlike Garfield in 2053, however, this strip makes no assumptions that Jim's death--essentially the point where the Garfield cast goes "poof" as hypothesized by this strip--will come before a certain timeframe; Jim's death cannot be accurately predicted until it actually happens. (The Garfield in 2053 gag assumes Jim will have for certain died by 2053; although that assumption is a likely possibility, it is as of present not a certainty--and thus still a hypothetical--as Jim still being alive by then is still within the realm of possibility; Jim would be aged 107-108 at the time if indeed he is still alive come 2053.)

The author's note brings up the day of the week the original Garfield strip ran on; the author couldn't resist putting the usual quip of Garfield not being a fan of Mondays into the product based on the script, despite the fact that the Garfield strip actually ran on a Friday; the Pearls Before Swine strip had the stated day be a Tuesday, which was indeed the day of the week it ran on.

Although not the last such strip to run (a few of this author's strips created before this one have yet to run), this strip was the last time the author used 600-pixel wide material to make a Square Root of Minus Garfield strip based around a singular base strip; the author started using higher-quality material afterward.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Never mind the fact that 2023-02-10 was a Friday...

Original Pearls Before Swine strip: 2023-02-21.

Original strip: 2023-02-10.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Jon: Do you ever wonder if all existence is just a creation of the mind?
Jim Davis: It is. I made you. And you. And that suit. And when I die, you all go 'poof'.
Garfield: That's gonna ruin my Monday
