Explanation[edit | edit source]

Garfield's original remark was that he was drowning in boredom, and that Jon was throwing him anchors. Here, Jon's question with a definitive answer reminded Garfield of food, specifically a jelly-or-custard-filled donut, sometimes called a "Bismar(c)k". The author's note mentions another food called a "Bismarck". Bismarck is the capital of North Dakota, thus the answer to Jon's question.

The title makes a pun between "donut" and "do not", and mentions Pierre, the capital of South Dakota.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Or a Dutch baby pancake.

Original strip: 2003-02-19.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Jon: There are some questions in life I guess I'll never know the answers to...
Jon: Like, "What's the capital of North Dakota?"
{Garfield's eyes go wide}
Jon: I can never get that one
{Garfield's eyes settle into dejection}
Garfield: Great, now I want a jelly-or-custard-filled donut

Trivia[edit | edit source]

The second-to-last line of the transcript on the Square Root of Minus Garfield site initially doubled the word "into"; this has since been fixed.
