Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip switches out Garfield for the Panel de Pon character Flare for the purpose of a joke reversal; where the original Garfield strip implied Garfield planned to use flares to keep Jon awake (in addition to the trombone retained in this strip), this strip implies Flare to use multiple Garfields to keep Jon awake.

The mention of Panel de Pon being "regrettably obscure" is due to the original SNES game having been a Japanese-exclusive release at the time this strip first ran; the release with the Yoshi's Island theme was made for western regions (that theme was later given a Game Boy release worldwide). Panel de Pon in its original form would finally appear in western regions on May 20, 2020 as part of the suite of SNES games playable on the Nintendo Switch with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

The same author would follow this strip up with 1948: Panelfield, this time using Panel de Pon's lead character, Lip.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Noun-switching is fun! For those not in the know, Flare is a character from the regrettably obscure SNES puzzle game Panel de Pon (later released with a Yoshi's Island theme as Tetris Attack).

Original strip: 1993-06-30.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Jon: Flare, for once I'd like a good night's sleep.
Flare: Oh, all right.
{Flare hands Jon a trombone.}
Flare: Here you go.
Jon: ...And the Garfields.
Flare: You are no fun, you know that?
