Explanation[edit | edit source]

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Today it was brought to my attention that Garfield has roughly the same colour scheme as Dr Seuss's Lorax. There are a lot of Garfield strips where Garfield expresses his displeasure for nature, but I think it's funnier when it's the environmental watchdog the Lorax doing it instead of a cat who's known for being lazy and selfish. I picked this strip to replace Garfield with the Lorax because of the word "unless", which in the context of The Lorax, is a ray of hope in a cautionary tale of environmental destruction. Now it just seems snarky.

Original strip: 1998-09-26.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Jon and the Lorax are enjoying nature}
Jon: You can't improve on nature.
Lorax: You're right, Jon.
Lorax: Unless we put a hot dog stand right over there.
