Explanation[edit | edit source]
In the original strip, Jon goes to frolic in the meadow, only to find that a hotel has been built on it. Garfield suggests he hang out in the lobby instead. In this edit, the general idea is the same, but the specifics are altered as a reference to the opening lyrics of "Big Yellow Taxi" by Joni Mitchell: "They paved paradise/And put up a parking lot".
The author's notes include an anecdote about having given away the album the song originates from (Hard Candy by Counting Crows), and expresses his regret with a rephrased version of another lyric from the song: "...you don't know what you've got/'Til it's gone."
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
I gave my copy of Hard Candy by Counting Crows to a charity shop. I wish I hadn't. I guess you don't really appreciate things until you don't have them any more, or something like that anyway.
