The author writes:

I like to make my own personal Garfield Minus Garfield strips occasionally. After I removed Garfield from this strip (and went through a hassle changing the direction the pea went in), I decided to go a bit further and take advantage of the copy-and-paste nature of the comics. I changed Jon's dialogue and expressions easily, and Jon began to look more like a strange troubled man who finds excitement in playing with his food.
