Explanation[edit | edit source]
In the original strip, Garfield's wondering was followed by him being silly for no apparent reason. Here, the panel is replaced by a picture of Jim Davis, reminding Garfield of the potential contract violation he might be guilty of if caught being serious.
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
When I saw this comic, I thought the ancient punchline needed a better setup, so I found a picture of Jim Davis from the Garfield website (where he was selling the latest book)...

Transcript[edit | edit source]
Garfield: I wonder if I may be serious for a moment.
Jim Davis: Garfield, this is your boss, Mr. Davis. You know that seriousness is a violation of your contract with us.
Garfield: Apparently not.
