Explanation[edit | edit source]

As explained by the author, the original strip was featured in a collection of "baffling Garfield strips" compiled by Peter Paltridge, who noted that this particular strip lacks irony because Garfield does not actually speak, but instead uses thought bubbles. This edit attempts to improve the punchline by turning Garfield into a talking cat.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Peter Paltridge of Platypus Comix recently highlighted a handful of odd Garfield strips, the original version of this strip among them. I thought I'd try my hand at making a version where Garfield actually talks, thus improving the strip. I had to draw an open mouth onto Garfield in the third panel myself (he already had one in the second panel). Original strip from 1984-06-09

Transcript[edit | edit source]

TV voice 1: Look who's come to visit, boys and girls. It's Jerry the cat. Hi, Jerry.
TV voice 2: Hi, uncle Roy.
TV voice 1: How are you?
TV voice 2: I'm fine. How are you.
Garfield: {actual speech bubble, not just a thought bubble} Uncle Roy is getting pretty bizarre.
TV voice 1: How's your mother?
TV voice 2: She's fine.
Garfield: {actual speech bubble, not just a thought bubble} Who'd be dumb enough to believe there is a talking cat?
