Explanation[edit | edit source]

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Whereas the original presumably wasn't first printed in colour, in the Garfield comic strip archives the liquid surrounding the "sploosh" is now yellow. This colour choice significantly changes the tone of the black and white original, giving the reader no doubt that Garfield landed in an unflushed toilet (perhaps Jon was conserving water by only flushing "brown" rather than "yellow", as some people insist on doing during droughts, or perhaps he was just a slob), which is far worse than what a newspaper reader in 1978 would have assumed, what with being less accustomed to seeing urine in newspaper comics than we are today.

So in this equally valid recolouring I have changed the "sploosh" colour to blue in accordance with TV adverts where any bodily fluid is always represented by blue liquid. For that reason it is just as safely ambiguous as the uncoloured original.

Original strip: 1978-10-09.
