Explanation[edit | edit source]

The strip's title is a reference to Garfield Minus Garfield, but also refers to the widely-maligned font Comic Sans; as is said in the author's comment, the French word for "without" is "sans". In typography, "sans-serif" is used to refer to fonts that lack serifs, or the lines at the ends of strokes in some fonts.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

This is the strip of 2007-10-12 relettered using the One Font.

It may help to know that "sans" is French for "without".

(Also, is it just me, or doesn't the dialogue in this strip have more rhyme than typical Garfield strips? We have "Liz"/"is", "my"/"tie", eye-rhyming straight"/"right", alliteration "leans a little", and a triple assonance in the third panel. Quite poetic, unless one demands poetry to have interesting meaning).

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Jon: Liz, is my tie on straight?
Liz: It leans a little right.
Jon: How about now?

Later references[edit | edit source]

  • The author Lubaf would later use an updated version of Comic Sans called Comic Neue starting with strip 1953.
