Explanation[edit | edit source]

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

In the English dub of the Pokémon anime, there was one infamous part where Brock calls his onigiri (rice balls) jelly-filled doughnuts, despite the food looking nothing like it. When I saw the strip in question, this idea came about.

For those of you who don't know, 4Kids' modifications from its source material were notorious among fans, because its edits were deemed unnecessary and a hindrance to the source material, potentially making something lost in translation and less cool (though it could be terribly hilarious). If you want a few other examples of 4Kids edits, there are a couple more where a rolling onigiri becomes a sandwich (unnaturally animated too), and another where a skull and crossbones symbol turns into a sad face.

So that the onigiri don't look too out of place, I added outlines to look more like it could fit a Garfield comic.

Original strip: 1983-01-01.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{A box with two onigiri is on a table, and Jon prepares to eat a brown onigiri}
{Before Jon could have a bite, something zoomed past Jon's face and stole his onigiri, leaving behind some hair}
SFX: ZOOM!
Garfield: {Took a bite from Jon's onigiri} Nothing beats a jelly-filled donut.
