Explanation[edit | edit source]

"Garfield Pulls His Weight" refers to Garfield Pulls His Weight: His 26th Book; the statement about the 1993-11-08 strip appearing at the end of that book is based on it collecting the original Garfield strips between 1993-04-11 through 1993-11-09 (both original Garfield strips used in this strip are duly covered in this particular collected volume), and at two daily strips per page the 1993-11-08 strip would indeed appear on the top of the last page of the primary bulk of the book (the 1993-11-09 strip being on the bottom of the same page).

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

This is similar to another strip I did, involving the Mailman's Wallet. Basically the premise of the strips are similar, but it isn't considered recycling because the punchline for both are different. In Garfield Pulls His Weight (an anthology book), the latter strip is printed at the very end of that book, making it something of a Brick Joke (as TV Tropes would call it).

Original strips: 1993-07-31, 1993-11-08.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Garfield imitates throwing a ball}
Garfield: Fetch the invisible ball, Odie!
{Odie gets excited}
{Odie runs past Garfield}
Garfield: That should keep him busy.
{Odie returns with something caught between his teeth, as if he got the invisible ball, to Garfield's surprise}
