Garfield and Mario have always seemed rather similar to me, in that they are both chubby and like Italian food. Cat Mario from Super Mario 3D World is an orangey yellow, furthering this connection.
As an aside, on the day I submitted this, the Mario-themed SRoMG #1834 was posted. How about that.
