Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip makes a visual pun themed to Panel de Pon, by inserting its lead character Lip next to Jon in the third panel and rewording Jon's dialogue so that what had originally been references to his own lips were now references to the character now next to him. Garfield's dialogue is unchanged, implying that Lip's presence is somehow linked to Jon's coffee (the heat from which was the punchline of the original Garfield strip). This strip's title is an allusion to Panel de Pon.

At the time this strip first ran, the original Panel de Pon in its original form was still exclusive to Japan; the original game was reskinned with a Yoshi's Island theme for the west (the title of the reskinned version is used for the linked Wikipedia article). Despite this, Lip's magic stick had appeared in Super Smash Bros. Melee globally, officially marking the west's first awareness of the character; nonetheless, Lip herself had still not officially visually appeared in the west at the time this strip first ran (her cameo from the otherwise character-free Planet Puzzle League was deleted from its western release, and the character labeled as Lip as a sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl is actually Furil, the main character from its sequel, misnamed as Lip; the long-hidden Panel de Pon GB Easter egg from Pokémon Puzzle Challenge had been discovered by this time, but it is unknown whether the playable character in that mode is actually supposed to be Lip) and would not until her depiction as a spirit in 2018's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The original Panel de Pon itself, untranslated, would finally appear in western regions on May 20, 2020 as part of the suite of SNES games playable on the Nintendo Switch with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

I saw the original comic and knew what I had to do. Ah, puns...

Consider this one a sort-of sequel to "Garflare".

Original strip: 2014-01-28.
