This strip's author took one panel from the original Garfield strip and erased two of the spider's legs to make it look like the spider met the definition of "insect"; as the author's notes state, the original Garfield strip straight-up referred to the spider, eight legs and all, as an insect and attempted to handwave the two extra legs as "spares".

Here's an example of an original strip that just doesn't work. In it, Jim Davis inadvertantly calls an arachnid an insect. I couldn't let that slide.
