There has been much criticism directed at Garfield about how un-catlike he actually behaves. The original strip from December 12, 1985 was when Jim Davis slipped up and revealed that Garfield was in fact human - or at least that the lasagna-loving cat occasionally(?) self-identifies as human. I have taken the liberty of correcting that blunder on Davis' part.

Jon: I have you figured out, Garfield. You refuse to take life on because you're afraid of failure.
{Jon has left}
Garfield: That shows what Jon knows about feline nature.
Garfield: Actually, I have a deep-seated fear of success.
