Explanation[edit | edit source]

This is a rather multifaceted strip - hold on tight.

On the surface, this is a call back to strip 1001, which had a similar gag out of Garfield celebrating a strip milestone shortly after it was achieved. This one goes a little farther by changing the sound effect to make the joke more blatant. (Also note the transcript, which makes fun of the illogicality of Garfield apparently searching for the 2000th strip in a random bottle.)

Underneath that, however, is the fact that the original strip (and SRoMG #1001) used a bottle of ketchup catsup, whereas this one uses a bottle of orange soda (DEIDATVM even went so far as to change the last panel so that said liquid wasn't opaque). The reasoning is made clear by its label: "who loves orange soda", the catchphrase of the character Kel on the late 90's Nickelodeon sitcom Kenan & Kel. This subtle gag gets pointed out in a non-obvious fashion in the author's notes, intentionally conflating "who" with the World Health Organization.

Finally, the title is a 1970 song by Caravan (in turn derived from a quote from famous English writer Spike Milligan).

Now there's something right there.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Oh, cool, the World Health Organization loves orange soda.

Based on strip 1001.

Original strip: 1979-05-22.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Garfield: I hope this is the 2000th strip.
{He looks down a bottle of orange soda, apparently looking for the 2000th strip}
SFX {possibly from the orange soda}: NOPE
{The orange soda spills on Garfield}
{Garfield glares at the viewer angrily, covered in sticky orange soda}
