Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original strip, the fish was a regular 'ol goldfish, and its bones lay in the bowl as part of the punchline. Here, the fish is altered to be a Cheep Cheep - a fish enemy from the Mario games - and its bones are replaced with a sprite of a Honebōn. Said enemy is exclusive to the Game Boy installment Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins and is said to be the skeleton of a Cheep Cheep, thus making it an obvious replacement.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

The Honebōn is a skeletal fish said to be the bones of a Cheep-Cheep.

So, yes, another video game reference. :)

Original strip: 1994-04-06.
